Thai Plantar Reflexology

Presentation
Thai plantar reflexology (Nuad Thao นวดเท้า or Thai Foot Massage) is a therapeutic discipline integral to traditional Thai medicine (Nuad Boran). It distinguishes itself from Western approaches through integration of the 'Sen Sib' system (ten fundamental energy lines of Thai medicine), systematic use of a wooden stick (Mai Krabong) and stretching techniques applied to feet and legs.
Tradition attributes its origins to the Indian physician Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, a contemporary of the Buddha (5th century BCE), considered the father of Thai medicine. The practice developed in Buddhist temples (Wat) where it was transmitted from master to disciple. Wat Pho in Bangkok remains the reference center for teaching this discipline.
Sen System
- Sen Sumana: Central line, corresponds to solar plexus and digestion. Ends at the big toe
- Sen Ittha: Left side of the body, linked to left internal organs
- Sen Pingkhala: Right side of the body, symmetrical to Ittha
- Sen Kalathari: Crossed lines linked to limbs and joints
Specific Techniques
- Wooden stick (Mai Krabong): 10–15 cm tamarind wood stick with rounded tip for precise, deep pressure on reflex points
- Thumb pressure: Static and circular thumb pressure, slower and deeper than Ingham method
- Foot stretches: Flexions, extensions and rotations of toes and ankles throughout the session
- Leg work: Acupressure and stretching on calf and knee following Sen lines
- Herbal balm: Thai herbal balm (lemongrass, camphor, menthol, ginger) for enhanced therapeutic effect

- Deep vein thrombosis or phlebitis
- Recent foot or leg fracture
- Significant painful varicose veins
- First trimester of pregnancy
- Open wounds or skin infections
