What is etiopathy?
Etiopathy is a manual therapy method that aims to identify and treat the original cause of functional disorders in the human body. Founded in 1963 by Christian Trédaniel, it relies on rigorous causal reasoning inspired by the scientific method. The term "etiopathy" comes from the Greek aitia (cause) and pathos (suffering): literally, the search for the cause of suffering.
Unlike a purely symptomatic approach, the etiopath analyzes causal chains leading to dysfunction. For example, a migraine may result from cervical tension, itself caused by a thoracic blockage linked to a visceral disorder. The etiopath traces this chain to treat the point of origin.
Etiopathy intervenes exclusively through precise and targeted manual manipulations. It does not use medications, needles, or devices. The practitioner uses their hands to restore mobility of the affected articular, visceral, or cranial structures.

How does an etiopathy session work?
An etiopathy consultation lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. It begins with a detailed interview: the practitioner questions you about your symptoms, their onset, their evolution, as well as your medical and surgical history. This step is crucial as it establishes the causal reasoning specific to etiopathy.
The etiopath then performs a targeted physical examination. They palpate the affected areas, evaluate joint mobility, and search for movement restrictions. Through their analysis, they identify the primary cause of the disorder and determine whether it falls within their scope of practice.
Treatment consists of precise manual manipulations adapted to the identified pathology. These gestures are generally quick and painless. It is common to feel immediate relief or within 24 to 48 hours after the session. The etiopath will indicate the number of sessions needed, often limited to 1 to 3 for an acute problem.
At the end of the consultation, the etiopath may recommend rest time or specific precautions. If the disorder does not fall within etiopathy's scope, they will refer you to the appropriate healthcare professional.

Benefits of etiopathy: speed and efficiency
Etiopathy stands out for the speed of its results. By directly treating the cause of the disorder, it often provides relief in just 1 to 3 sessions. Patients appreciate this efficiency, especially for acute pain such as lumbago, stiff neck, or sciatica.
Beyond the musculoskeletal system, etiopathy effectively treats functional digestive disorders (bloating, constipation, reflux), recurrent ENT disorders (sinusitis, serous otitis), migraines and headaches of mechanical origin, as well as certain functional circulatory and gynecological disorders.
The preventive approach is also a major advantage. By identifying and correcting imbalances before they become symptomatic, etiopathy helps maintain good functional health in the long term. Athletes find it a valuable tool for preventing injuries and optimizing performance.

Etiopathy training and regulation
Etiopathy training takes place in one of the four approved free faculties of etiopathy in France (Paris, Rennes, Lyon, Toulouse). The curriculum lasts 6 years and includes over 5,000 hours of teaching in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, medical pathology, and manual techniques specific to etiopathy.
Students complete intensive clinical internships during the last two years, treating several hundred patients under supervision. A research thesis validates the end of the curriculum. The etiopath diploma is awarded after passing all examinations.
Etiopathy is registered in the National Register of Professional Certifications (RNCP). Etiopaths are grouped within the French Institute of Etiopathy and the National Register of Etiopaths. They are subject to a strict code of ethics and mandatory continuing education.
On PratiConnect, each etiopath is verified: diploma, registry enrollment, and professional insurance are checked before profile publication.

When to consult an etiopath?
Etiopathy is indicated for a wide range of functional disorders. The most common reasons for consultation concern the musculoskeletal system: lower back pain, neck pain, thoracic pain, neuralgias (sciatica, cruralgia, cervicobrachial neuralgia), sprains, tendinitis, and various joint pains.
Functional digestive disorders respond very well to etiopathy: gastritis, bloating, chronic constipation, functional colopathy, gastroesophageal reflux, and hepatobiliary disorders. Functional hiatal hernias can be effectively treated.
Etiopathy also addresses recurrent ENT and respiratory disorders (chronic sinusitis, serous otitis, repeated bronchitis), headaches and migraines, certain vertigo, lower limb circulatory disorders, and functional gynecological disorders (painful periods, cycle disorders).
In infants, the etiopath treats birth-related disorders: regurgitation, colic, sleep disorders, positional cranial deformations. In athletes, it optimizes recovery and prevents recurrent injuries.
