What is an energy healer?

An energy healer is a practitioner specialized in rebalancing the subtle energies of the body. This approach is based on the fundamental principle that every living being possesses an energy field (also called biofield or aura) whose imbalances can manifest as physical, emotional or psychological disorders. Energy healing aims to restore the harmonious flow of this vital energy.

The history of energy healing dates back thousands of years, present in all traditions: prana in India, qi in China, ki in Japan, ruach in Hebrew. In the 20th century, several structured methods emerged. Reiki, founded by Mikao Usui in Japan in 1922, has become the most widespread energy practice in the world. Magnetism, heir to 18th-century mesmerism, remains very popular in France. Other approaches include Therapeutic Touch (Dolores Krieger, 1970), Quantum Touch, Pranic Healing by Choa Kok Sui, and The Reconnection by Eric Pearl.

The theoretical framework of energy healing revolves around several concepts: the seven main chakras (energy centers aligned along the spine, from Muladhara to Sahasrara), meridians (energy circulation channels), the aura (electromagnetic field surrounding the body) and subtle bodies (etheric, astral, mental, causal). The energy healer perceives and corrects blockages, leaks or stagnations in these energy systems.

It is essential to emphasize that energy healing is complementary to conventional medicine and never replaces it. A responsible energy healer never asks patients to stop medical treatment. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the US NIH funds research on biofield therapies, reflecting growing scientific interest in these practices.

How does an energy healing session work?

An energy healing session typically begins with an in-depth interview where the practitioner explores your overall health, history, current concerns and expectations. This energy assessment helps identify areas of imbalance and guide the session. The practitioner may also perform an energy evaluation through sensing, pendulum or kinesiological testing to assess the state of your chakras and meridians.

During the actual session, you remain clothed and lying on a massage table. In Reiki, the practitioner places their hands on or above different body parts, following a precise protocol covering head, chest, abdomen and back positions. In magnetism, the practitioner performs magnetic passes (hand movements at a distance from the body) to rebalance the energy field. Other techniques include aura cleansing, chakra harmonization, releasing stagnant energies and channeling universal energy.

A session typically lasts between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours. Sensations experienced vary considerably from person to person: warmth, tingling, shivers, emerging emotions, feelings of lightness or heaviness, visualizations. Some patients feel nothing particular during the session but notice effects in the following days. The practitioner generally concludes with grounding to help you fully return to your body.

The recommended number of sessions depends on the issue: 1 to 3 sessions for occasional rebalancing, 5 to 10 for deeper work on longstanding blockages. Spacing of 2 to 4 weeks between sessions is typical to allow the body to integrate energetic changes.

Benefits of energy healing

Energy healing is primarily sought for its profound effect on stress and anxiety. Several clinical studies on Reiki, including a meta-analysis published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine, show significant reduction in perceived stress, anxiety and pain in hospitalized patients. Energy healing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a state of deep relaxation comparable to that achieved in meditation.

Physically, clients frequently report improved sleep quality, reduced chronic pain (migraines, muscle tension, fibromyalgia), strengthened immune system and accelerated post-operative recovery. Tenon Hospital in Paris and Institut Curie now integrate Reiki into their complementary oncology care offerings, reflecting growing institutional recognition.

Emotionally and psychologically, energy healing facilitates the release of old emotional blockages, soothing of trauma, improved self-confidence and inner recentering. Many clients describe a sensation of mental clarity, inner peace and reconnection with themselves after sessions. Energy healing is often used alongside psychotherapy to facilitate work on emotional wounds.

Who can benefit and when to consult?

Energy healing is suitable for a wide audience: adults, children, elderly people, pregnant women and even animals. The most common reasons for consultation include chronic stress, professional burnout, sleep disorders, unexplained chronic pain, anxiety and depressive states, and preparation for or recovery from surgical procedures. Energy healing is also highly sought as a complement to heavy treatments such as chemotherapy.

Contraindications are limited but should be known: people suffering from severe psychiatric disorders (psychosis, unstabilized schizophrenia) should be directed to appropriate medical care. A responsible energy healer refuses any patient who has not consulted a doctor for an acute symptom and never makes medical diagnoses. Energy healing in no way replaces prescribed medical treatment.

In France, more and more institutions integrate energy healing: hospitals (oncology, palliative care), nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, companies (stress management), and patient support associations. This institutional integration reflects evolving attitudes and growing patient demand for complementary approaches. PratiConnect allows you to find a certified energy healer near you and book an appointment in just a few clicks.

Training and certifications

There is no protected title of energy healer in France, and the profession is not regulated by the state. Nevertheless, several structured training paths exist. For Reiki, the Usui system comprises three degrees: Shoden (1st degree, initiation and self-treatment), Okuden (2nd degree, symbols and distance treatment) and Shinpiden (3rd degree/Master, teaching and transmission of initiations). Each degree requires integrated practice before progressing, with a recommended minimum of 6 months between levels.

For magnetism, training is traditionally transmitted through apprenticeship with an experienced magnetizer. However, structured schools have emerged, offering 100 to 500 hours of training covering energy anatomy, magnetic pass techniques, professional ethics and sensitivity development. Some programs are registered with RNCP (National Directory of Professional Certifications), providing official recognition of the training pathway.

Professional federations such as the French Reiki Federation (FFR), the National Union of Magnetizers and Practitioners of Natural and Wellness Methods (SNAMAP), and the Federation of Energy Practitioners help structure the profession, define codes of ethics and maintain registers of qualified practitioners. On PratiConnect, listed energy healers present their certifications and training to help you choose with full transparency.
