Presentation

Yin-Yang theory is the philosophical foundation of all TCM. It postulates that all phenomena result from the dynamic interaction between two complementary and opposing forces. Health is the expression of dynamic Yin-Yang balance; disease is its disruption.

Core Principles

  • Opposition: Yin and Yang are opposite — cold/hot, rest/activity, interior/exterior.
  • Interdependence: neither can exist without the other.
  • Mutual consumption: increase in one causes decrease in the other.
  • Inter-transformation: at extremes, Yin transforms into Yang and vice versa.

Clinical Applications

  • Classification of all symptoms and signs
  • Treatment strategy orientation
  • Acupuncture point and herbal medicine selection
  • Dietary and lifestyle advice

Limitations

  • Philosophical framework, not biochemical model
  • Always relative, never absolute
