Reiki Self-Treatment
Daily Reiki self-care practice allowing the initiated practitioner to channel universal energy onto themselves to maintain energy balance and overall health.
Presentation
Reiki self-treatment is a fundamental practice taught from the first degree of initiation (Shoden). Mikao Usui considered self-treatment as the cornerstone of Reiki practice: before treating others, the practitioner must first care for themselves. This daily discipline keeps energy channels open, strengthens the connection to universal energy and ensures optimal physical, emotional and mental balance.
Self-treatment involves placing one's own hands in a series of positions on different body parts, following a structured protocol covering main areas from head to feet. Each position is held for 3 to 5 minutes, for a total duration of 30 to 60 minutes. Practiced regularly, self-treatment develops sensitivity to energy flows and deepens the practitioner's intuition.
Core Principles
Self-treatment is based on the principle that the initiated Reiki practitioner is a permanent channel for universal energy. By simply placing hands on oneself with the intention to receive, energy naturally flows to areas of imbalance. The five Reiki principles (Gokai) are ideally recited before each self-treatment to establish a conducive mental framework.
Self-treatment positions generally follow this sequence:
- Head: Forehead, temples, back of head, jaw/throat
- Torso: Heart, solar plexus, abdomen
- Back: Kidneys, sacrum (if accessible)
- Limbs: Knees, ankles, feet

Self-Treatment Protocol
The practitioner settles comfortably, seated or lying down, in a calm environment. After taking several deep breaths and reciting the five principles, they activate Reiki energy (by intention or symbol depending on level). Hands are placed successively on each position for 3 to 5 minutes. Common sensations include warmth, tingling, pulsation or a deep sense of peace. The practitioner remains attentive to body messages without forcing anything. Self-treatment ends with a gesture of gratitude and a few minutes of silence.
Contraindications
Reiki self-treatment has no known contraindications, as the energy is self-regulating. However:
- Never substitute self-treatment for prescribed medical treatment
- Detoxification reactions may occur during the first days of regular practice
- In case of intense fatigue, reduce duration rather than stopping practice
