Trager Approach — Integrative Psychophysical Method
Somato-psychic method developed by Milton Trager combining gentle rocking and oscillating movements of the limbs and trunk, aiming to release chronic neuromuscular tension patterns and re-educate the central nervous system toward light, fluid movement patterns.
Presentation
The Trager Approach was developed by Milton Trager (1908–1997), an American self-taught physician of Polish origin. At age 18, Trager intuitively discovered his techniques while working on a boxing trainer with sciatica. He received his medical degree at 42 from the University of Guadalajara (Mexico) and developed his method over 50 years before formalizing it at the Esalen Institute in the 1970s.
The method is based on the concept of hook-up: a state of full presence and inner lightness that the practitioner maintains throughout the session to transmit through touch a quality of movement — lightness, freedom, fluidity — that the receiver's nervous system integrates and memorizes.
