Supporting Caregivers: Preventing Burnout
In France, 11 million people daily support a dependent loved one — an elderly parent, a child with disabilities, a spouse with chronic illness. These family caregivers, often invisible, bear considerable physical, emotional, and administrative burden that exposes them to burnout, depression, and health problems. Recognizing, supporting, and accompanying them through therapeutic and natural approaches is a major public health challenge.
The reality of caregivers in France
According to the BVA-April Foundation barometer (2023), 11 million French people are family caregivers — one in five adults. Among them, 57% are women, 47% work simultaneously, and one in two reports exhaustion. Caregiving averages 6.5 hours daily, seven days a week, usually without leave or pay.
Caregiver burnout syndrome
Manifestations include permanent fatigue, feeling overwhelmed, increasing irritability toward the care recipient (causing intense guilt), progressive social isolation, abandoning own health needs, chronic sleep disturbances, and depressive symptoms. Caregivers have 63% higher mortality risk than non-caregivers of the same age (Schulz and Beach, 1999).
Psychological support
Support groups offer verbalization, emotion normalization, and experience sharing. Individual therapy addresses guilt, ambivalence, anticipatory grief, and relationship redefinition. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is particularly adapted.
Natural approaches for caregivers
Sophrology: quick breathing exercises, muscle relaxation, resource visualization. Reflexology: dedicated care moment breaking chronic tension. Naturopathy: adrenal support (adaptogens), sleep management, targeted supplementation. Mindfulness: MBSR programs for caregivers show significant stress, anxiety, and depression reduction (Whitebird et al., 2013).
Knowing your rights
In France: caregiver leave (up to 3 months, renewable, compensated), APA funding for respite, right to respite enabling temporary care for the dependent person.
