Comfort Care and End-of-Life Support
End-of-life support extends well beyond the medical framework of palliative care. Complementary approaches — aromatherapy, therapeutic touch, music therapy, sophrology, reflexology — provide precious physical and emotional relief where curative treatments have reached their limits. They restore dignity, comfort, and human connection in life's final moments. Their integration into palliative care units is growing, supported by scientific evidence and demand from patients and families.
Palliative care: a framework of compassion
Palliative care aims to improve quality of life for patients facing life-threatening illness. Complementary approaches don't oppose medical care but enrich it, addressing needs pharmacology alone cannot meet: human contact, relaxation, beauty, meaning, and connection.
Aromatherapy in palliative care
Room diffusion creates calming environments; aromatic massage relieves pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. A systematic review by Soden et al. (2004) shows aromatic massage significantly reduces anxiety in palliative patients.
Therapeutic touch and massage
Touch-massage restores a positive body relationship. Adapted to palliative care: light pressure, short duration (15-30 minutes), chosen zones (hands, feet, shoulders, scalp). Foot reflexology provides deep relaxation without body mobilization.
Music therapy
A Cochrane meta-analysis by Bradt et al. (2016) concludes music therapy significantly reduces anxiety and improves quality of life in palliative care. Familiar music can awaken memories and create precious connection moments.
Sophrology at end of life
Guided breathing manages anxiety and dyspnea. Visualizations may address peaceful places, happy memories, or symbolic passage images. Also valuable for caregivers managing their own stress.
Supporting families
Families experience anticipatory grief, helplessness, guilt, and exhaustion. Natural approaches can be offered to them: relaxation sessions, hand massage during vigils, support groups.
