The three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — are the fundamental biophysical principles of Ayurvedic medicine. Formed by combining the five elements (Pancha Mahabhutas), each governs specific body and mind functions.

Vata (Ether + Air)

Principle: Movement, transport, communication

Functions: Breathing, circulation, nerve transmission, creativity

Imbalance: Anxiety, insomnia, constipation, dry skin, joint pain

Pitta (Fire + Water)

Principle: Transformation, metabolism, digestion

Functions: Digestion, thermoregulation, vision, intellect

Imbalance: Inflammation, ulcers, acidity, skin rashes, anger

Kapha (Water + Earth)

Principle: Structure, cohesion, lubrication

Functions: Bone structure, joint lubrication, immunity, memory

Imbalance: Obesity, lethargy, congestion, edema, attachment
