Auricular Reflexology

Stimulation of ear reflex zones through digital pressure or non-invasive tools, using the correspondence between auricular points and body organs without acupuncture.

Auricular Reflexology

Presentation

Auricular reflexology stimulates reflex zones of the ear (auricle) through non-invasive means: digital pressure, massage, acupressure seeds or surface electrical stimulation. It differs from medical auriculotherapy (developed by Dr Paul Nogier in 1957 in Lyon) which uses acupuncture needles or lasers.

The fundamental principle is that the ear contains a miniature body representation as an 'inverted fetus': the head corresponds to the earlobe, the spine to the antihelix, internal organs to the concha, and limbs to the scaphoid and triangular fossae. This somatotopy was validated by the WHO in 1990, which standardized 43 auricular points.

Auricular Map

  • Earlobe: Head and face — eyes, jaw, teeth, frontal brain. 'Shen Men' point (Spirit Gate) is the most used point for relaxation and analgesia
  • Antihelix: Spine — cervical, thoracic, lumbar
  • Scaphoid fossa: Upper limbs — shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers
  • Triangular fossa: Lower limbs — hip, knee, ankle. Uterus/prostate point
  • Upper concha: Abdominal cavity — stomach, intestines, kidneys
  • Lower concha: Thoracic cavity — heart, lungs, bronchi
  • Tragus: Nose, throat, adrenal glands

Stimulation Techniques

  • Digital pressure: Thumb and index pressure on both sides of the auricle, held 10–30 seconds per point
  • Vaccaria seeds: Small seeds fixed on auricular points with transparent tape, self-stimulated by patient several times daily for 3–5 days
  • Auricular massage: Global ear massage for general stimulation and relaxation
  • Surface electrical stimulation (auricular TENS): Micro-currents applied to auricular points for enhanced analgesic effect

Main Indications

  • Chronic pain (lower back, neck, joint pain)
  • Smoking cessation and addictions
  • Stress, anxiety and insomnia (Shen Men + Zero point)
  • Digestive disorders
  • Weight management and appetite disorders
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Menstrual pain and hormonal disorders
  • Post-operative pain management

Contraindications

  • Skin lesions of the ear
  • Active external otitis or ear infection
  • Pregnancy: certain points to avoid
  • Tape allergy (use hypoallergenic alternatives)
