Auriculotherapy for Smoking Cessation

Auriculotherapy — stimulation of reflex points on the ear — is one of the most widely used techniques in smoking cessation. Developed by Dr. Paul Nogier in Lyon in the 1950s, it is based on the somatotopic body representation on the ear.

Auriculotherapy for Smoking Cessation

Introduction

Auriculotherapy uses the ear as a reflex map of the entire body. Dr. Paul Nogier (Lyon, 1956) described auricular somatotopy. The WHO validated 39 auricular points in 1987. It is among the most prescribed complementary approaches by tobacco specialists.

Key Anti-Tobacco Points

  • Lung point: reduces respiratory symptoms and oral cravings.
  • Shen Men: calming, anxiolytic, analgesic. Major addiction point.
  • Hunger/Satiety point: controls post-cessation appetite increase.
  • Sympathetic point: regulates autonomic nervous system.
  • Liver point: supports hepatic detoxification.
  • Zero point (Nogier): general balancing.

Stimulation Techniques

  • Semi-permanent needles (ASP): left in place 3-7 days, patient stimulates during cravings.
  • Vaccaria seeds: non-invasive alternative. Patient presses 10-15 seconds during cravings.
  • Auricular laser: painless, no infection risk.

Results

Auriculotherapy alone: 15-30% abstinence at 6 months. Combined with other approaches: 35-50%. Bier et al. (2002): correct auriculotherapy superior to sham. Particularly effective for acute withdrawal symptom management.
