Presentation

Toyohari (東洋鍼, 'Oriental needle') is a Japanese acupuncture style developed in the 1950s–1960s by a group of blind practitioners in Japan, the most influential being Kodo Fukushima. In Japan, a long tradition dating to the Edo era associates blind acupuncturists with exceptional palpatory sensitivity.

What fundamentally distinguishes Toyohari is its extreme gentleness: in most cases, needles do not penetrate the skin. The practitioner holds a gold (tonification) or silver (dispersion) needle at the skin surface and perceives Qi movement through their fingers.

Founders: Kodo Fukushima and colleagues, Japan, 1950s–1960s.

Core Principles

  • Contact technique (sesshoku-shin): needle held at skin surface without insertion.
  • Precious metal needles: gold tonifies (Yang), silver disperses (Yin).
  • Palpatory diagnosis: identifying areas of 'emptiness' (kyo) and 'fullness' (jitsu).
  • Root treatment (hon-chi-hĹŤ): correcting fundamental Five Element imbalance BEFORE addressing local symptoms.
  • Continuous feedback: pulse and meridian palpation between each needle.

Main Indications

  • Extremely sensitive patients, children, infants, frail elderly
  • Chronic energetic disorders: deep fatigue, exhaustion
  • Emotional disorders: anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Functional digestive disorders
  • Allergies, eczema, asthma
  • Chronic resistant pain

Session Overview

Session begins with thorough palpatory diagnosis: pulse taking (6 positions), meridian palpation, abdominal (hara) and back palpation. Contact needles are applied with extreme delicacy. Pulse is checked after each needle. Duration: 30–60 minutes.

Contraindications

  • Very few contraindications due to non-penetrating approach
  • Metal allergies (gold, silver) — very rare
  • Standard acupuncture contraindications apply if insertion is performed
