Grief is a universal yet profoundly singular experience. Losing a loved one disrupts physical, emotional, and existential balance. Understanding grief

Grief is the psychological and emotional process following the loss of a significant person. Modern clinicians prefer Stroebe and Schut's (1999) "dual process" model: oscillation between loss-oriented coping (confronting pain, memories) and restoration-oriented coping (rebuilding daily life, identity, projects). Healthy grief is oscillatory, not linear.

The DSM-5-TR introduced "prolonged grief disorder" when incapacitating grief intensity persists after 12 months (6 months in children).

Grief manifestations

Emotional: deep sadness, guilt, anger, anxiety, emptiness. Cognitive: concentration difficulties, intrusive thoughts, rumination. Physical: intense fatigue, sleep disturbances, appetite changes, chest tightness, increased infection susceptibility. Social: isolation, irritability.

Therapeutic approaches

CBT for complicated grief (Shear et al., 2005), interpersonal therapy, EMDR for traumatic loss. Support groups offer normalization, mutual support, and shared understanding.

Natural approaches

Sophrology: breathing, relaxation, and symbolic visualization. Herbal medicine: St. John's wort for mild depression, rhodiola for stress resistance, passionflower for sleep. Art therapy: externalization through artistic expression, particularly relevant for grieving children. Mindfulness meditation: MBSR shows positive effects on grief symptoms. Naturopathy: anti-inflammatory nutrition, sleep support, adaptogenics.
