Karuna Reiki
Advanced Reiki system developed by William Lee Rand, centered on compassion and using specific symbols to address deep emotional patterns and cellular trauma.
Presentation
Karuna Reiki is an advanced energy healing system developed and trademarked by William Lee Rand, founder of the International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT), in the 1990s. The word 'Karuna' is a Sanskrit and Pali term meaning 'compassionate action' or 'enlightened compassion.' This system is considered a natural evolution of Usui Reiki, working on deeper layers of being.
Unlike traditional Usui Reiki, Karuna Reiki uses additional symbols channeled by several Reiki masters. These symbols are specifically designed to work on deep emotional trauma, unconscious patterns, cellular memories and karmic dimensions. Karuna Reiki energy is described as more intense and more targeted than Usui Reiki.
Founder: William Lee Rand (born 1952)
Core Principles
Karuna Reiki is based on the principle that universal compassion is a powerful healing force. Karuna energy works simultaneously on all energy bodies (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) and on root causes of imbalances. The system includes toning of symbols, a unique practice that amplifies treatment effect through sound vibration combined with intention.
Two levels are taught — Karuna Reiki I and Karuna Reiki II — each comprising four specific symbols. Access to Karuna Reiki requires having reached Usui Reiki master level.

Session Overview
A Karuna Reiki session begins like a classic Usui session, with centering and connecting to energy. The practitioner then uses Karuna symbols based on identified needs, tracing them mentally or physically on the receiver's body. The distinctive feature is toning integration: the practitioner chants symbol names to amplify their vibration. The energy is often felt as deeper and more transformative. Emotional releases may occur during the session. Extended integration time is recommended after treatment.
Contraindications
- Same precautions as Usui Reiki
- Not recommended for individuals in extreme psychological fragility without medical supervision
- Energy intensity may cause more pronounced cleansing reactions (emotional purging) than Usui Reiki
- Space sessions 7 to 14 days apart to allow integration
