Hot Stone Massage

Presentation

Hot stone massage has roots in many ancient traditions (Native American, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Hawaiian). In its modern form, it was popularized by Mary Nelson Hannigan, an Arizona massage therapist who developed and trademarked LaStone Therapy in 1993. The technique combines thermotherapy (heat from basalt stones) with classic massage strokes, producing deep muscular relaxation 2 to 3 times faster than ordinary massage.

Basalt stones are chosen for their capacity to retain heat and their smooth surface. They are heated in a controlled water bath. Some protocols also use cold marble stones to create thermal contrast (alternating vasoconstriction/vasodilation) promoting circulation.

Modern popularizer: Mary Nelson Hannigan, LaStone Therapy (1993)
