It involves producing sustained vocal sounds — vowels, consonants or free sounds — with the intention of creating therapeutic internal vibration. The term 'toning' was popularized by Laurel Elizabeth Keyes in her book 'Toning: The Creative Power of the Voice' (1973), though the practice itself is as old as the human voice.
The human voice is the most powerful and personal sound therapy instrument: it vibrates within the practitioner's own body, creating direct internal resonance.
