Biodanza
A system of human integration through movement, music and group encounter, created by Rolando Toro, aimed at stimulating the genetic potentials of life expression: vitality, sexuality, creativity, affectivity and transcendence.
Presentation
Biodanza ('dance of life,' from Greek bios = life and Spanish danza = dance) is a system of human integration through movement, music and group encounter situations. Created in the 1960s by Rolando Toro Araneda (1924–2010), Chilean psychologist and anthropologist. Toro developed Biodanza from clinical observations with psychiatric patients, noting that certain music and movements produced powerful regulatory effects on emotional state, vitality and social bonding.
Founder: Rolando Toro Araneda (1924–2010), psychologist and anthropologist, Santiago, Chile
Core Principles
The biocentric principle: life is at the center of everything. Biodanza places life — not rationality, productivity or morality — at its philosophical core.
Five lines of vivencia: Vitality (energy, joy, action), Sexuality (pleasure, sensuality, body connection), Creativity (innovation, expression), Affectivity (love, tenderness, bonding), Transcendence (harmony with nature, unity).
Vivencia: a deeply felt experience in the present moment — sensory, emotional and motor, not cognitive. Change occurs through accumulating positive vivencias.
The group as rebirth matrix: Biodanza is exclusively practiced in groups. The group is a 'nourishing field' where authentic encounter is the main transformation vector.
Music as inducer: each exercise is paired with specifically selected music for its emotional and energetic qualities.
