Hypnosis and EFT for Weight Relationship
Hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) offer a mind-body approach to transform one's relationship with weight and food. Rather than imposing another diet, these methods work on the emotional and behavioral roots of weight imbalances: food compulsions, emotional eating, negative body image and limiting beliefs about weight.
Introduction
The psycho-emotional dimension of the weight relationship is often underestimated. Many people eat not from hunger but from emotion, boredom, stress or habit. Attempts at weight control through willpower alone collide with powerful unconscious mechanisms. Hypnosis and EFT offer tools to access and transform these mechanisms.
Hypnosis and Weight
Principles
Therapeutic hypnosis for weight doesn't aim to "program" weight loss through suggestion. It works on unconscious patterns: emotional eating, food compulsions, body image, limiting beliefs and hunger/satiety signal reconnection.
Techniques
- Hypnotic gastric band: simulating gastric band placement under hypnosis, creating reduced stomach and rapid satiety sensation.
- Regression: returning to the event that initiated problematic eating behavior.
- Futurization: projecting into a future with a peaceful food relationship.
- Self-hypnosis: daily exercises for vulnerable moments.
Scientific Evidence
Kirsch (1996) meta-analysis showed adding hypnosis to weight management programs doubled weight loss effectiveness on average. Bo et al. (2018) with 120 obese patients confirmed significant reductions in weight, waist circumference and cravings.
EFT and Weight
Principles
EFT combines acupuncture point tapping with emotion and thought verbalization. For weight, it targets cravings, underlying emotions, food-related trauma and limiting beliefs.
Protocol
- Evaluate craving intensity 0-10 (SUD scale).
- Setup phrase while tapping karate chop point.
- Tapping sequence on meridian points while verbalizing the problem.
- Re-evaluate intensity. Repeat until reaching 0-2.
- Positive reframe.
Scientific Evidence
Stapleton et al. (2012) RCT with 96 overweight/obese adults: 8 EFT sessions significantly reduced food cravings, weight, BMI and psychological distress — maintained at 12 months. Clond (2016) meta-analysis: significant EFT effect on anxiety (d = 1.23).
Combining Hypnosis and EFT
- EFT handles emotions and cravings in real-time (emergency tool).
- Hypnosis works deeply on unconscious patterns and beliefs.
- Both ensure patient autonomy through self-practice.
- Both are compatible with nutritional follow-up and physical activity.
