Naturopathic Constitution

Presentation

The naturopathic constitution is a central naturopathy concept integrating several frameworks for understanding the individual. It provides a person's "biological identity card": hereditary strengths, constitutional weaknesses, stress and disease response patterns, and specific needs for diet, exercise and lifestyle. Constitution is considered innate and stable throughout life, unlike terrain which is modifiable.

Morphotypes

The ectomorph (longilinear): thin, elongated body, long limbs, fine musculature. Fast metabolism, dominant nervous system. Tends toward demineralization, anxiety and nervous disorders. The endomorph (brevilinear): stocky, round body, broad frame. Slow metabolism, dominant digestive system. Tends toward weight overload, circulatory and digestive disorders. The mesomorph (normolinear): proportionate, muscular body, good general vitality.

Temperaments

Constitution integrates the four Hippocratic temperaments: Sanguine (warm/moist): jovial, expansive. Bilious (warm/dry): energetic, determined. Nervous/Melancholic (cold/dry): intellectual, introspective. Lymphatic/Phlegmatic (cold/moist): calm, slow.

Constitutional Synthesis

The naturopath crosses these frameworks to establish a personalized constitutional synthesis guiding the entire long-term naturopathic strategy.
