General Physical Preparation (GPP)
Versatile training program aimed at developing basic physical qualities — endurance, strength, flexibility, coordination — as the essential foundation for any sport practice and functional health.
Presentation
General Physical Preparation (GPP) forms the foundation of any sports training program. It aims to harmoniously develop fundamental physical qualities without discipline specialization. The concept was formalized by Soviet coaches in the 1950s-1960s, notably by Lev Matveev in his periodization theory.
Physical Qualities Developed
- Aerobic endurance: capacity for prolonged low-to-moderate intensity effort
- General strength: capacity to produce muscular tension against resistance
- Flexibility: joint range of motion and muscular elasticity
- Coordination: ability to chain complex movements fluidly
- Speed: capacity to react and move rapidly
- Balance: static and dynamic postural stability
Standard Program
A standard GPP program involves 3-5 weekly sessions of 45-75 minutes: warm-up (10-15 min), main session (30-45 min: circuit training or themed session) and cool-down (10-15 min: stretching, breathing, relaxation). Progressive overload is essential.
Indications
- Season start (all sports)
- Activity resumption after sedentary period
- Post-injury reconditioning
- Off-season fitness maintenance
- Injury prevention for amateur athletes
- Functional health improvement in seniors
