Specific Physical Preparation (SPP)
Training phase targeting physical qualities specific to a given sport, with exercises reproducing the biomechanical and energy demands of competition.
Presentation
Specific Physical Preparation (SPP) follows GPP in training planning. It aims to transfer acquired general physical qualities toward the precise demands of the practiced sport. SPP uses exercises reproducing movement patterns, energy systems and biomechanical constraints of the target activity.
Principles
SPP follows the SAID principle (Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands). It integrates the dominant energy systems: aerobic, anaerobic lactic, anaerobic alactic, and reproduces sport-specific motor patterns.
Examples by Sport
- Football: high-intensity intermittent runs, repeated sprints, ball proprioception
- Tennis: lateral movement speed, striking power, intermittent endurance
- Swimming: shoulder and trunk strength, aquatic core stability
- Martial arts: striking power, reactivity, dynamic flexibility
- Running: threshold work, hills, fartlek, foot and Achilles tendon strengthening
