Sports Cryotherapy (Whole Body and Local)
Therapeutic application of extreme cold — cryogenic chamber or local applications — to accelerate muscular recovery, reduce inflammation and relieve post-exercise pain in athletes.
Presentation
Sports cryotherapy uses cold as a therapeutic agent for recovery and injury treatment. Two main modalities: Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) in cryogenic chamber at -110 to -160°C for 2-4 minutes, and local cryotherapy applied directly to affected areas. Cold Water Immersion (CWI) at 10-15°C for 10-15 minutes is the most common form.
Sports Protocols
- Post-training cold bath: 10-15°C, 10-15 min, within 30 min after exercise
- Contrast therapy: alternating hot/cold, 5-7 cycles
- Cryogenic chamber: -110 to -160°C, 2-4 min
- Local cryotherapy: ice pack, 15-20 min, RICE/POLICE protocol
Contraindications
