Functional Training
Training method based on natural multi-joint, multi-plane movements that reproduce everyday and sporting gestures to improve overall functional capacity.
Presentation
Functional Training is a physical preparation approach favoring natural human body movements in all three planes. Popularized by pioneers like Gray Cook (FMS), Michael Boyle and Gary Gray, it opposes traditional analytical machine-based training. Functional training views the body as an integrated system where muscle chains work synergistically.
Core Principles
Functional movements rest on seven fundamental motor patterns: squat, lunge, push, pull, twist, hip hinge and locomotion. Each exercise engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously, requires core stabilization and develops neuromuscular coordination.
Indications
- General fitness improvement
- Injury prevention
- Sports preparation
- Post-injury return to sport
- Senior functional autonomy
- Weight loss and body recomposition
