Sports Visualization and Mental Imagery
Mental preparation technique involving mentally creating or recreating sports experiences engaging all senses, to improve performance, confidence and motor learning.
Presentation
Sports visualization (or mental imagery) is one of the most used and studied mental preparation techniques in elite sport. It involves mentally representing execution of a technical gesture, tactical sequence or competitive situation while engaging sensory channels. Neuroscience research has demonstrated that mental imagery activates the same neural circuits as actual movement execution (functional equivalence theory).
Imagery Types
Internal imagery (first person): more effective for kinesthetic aspects. External imagery (third person): more effective for form correction. Motivational imagery: visualizing success. Coping imagery: visualizing difficulties and overcoming strategies.
PETTLEP Protocol
The most scientifically validated visualization protocol with 7 components: Physical, Environment, Task, Timing, Learning, Emotion, Perspective. Sessions last 10-20 minutes, ideally practiced daily.
