Goal Setting (SMART)

Presentation

Goal setting is one of the most scientifically robust sport psychology techniques. The SMART model, adapted to sport by Locke & Latham's goal-setting theory (1990), has been shown to significantly improve performance, motivation and training adherence.

The SMART Model

Specific: precise and clearly defined. Measurable: quantifiable for evaluation. Achievable: ambitious but realistic. Relevant: aligned with values and constraints. Time-bound: with clear deadline.

Goal Types

  • Outcome goals: related to final result. Motivating but partially uncontrollable.
  • Performance goals: related to personal measurable standards. Under athlete's control.
  • Process goals: related to actions and behaviors. Most controllable and effective for daily improvement.
