Family Constellation (Hellinger)
A transgenerational psychotherapeutic method by Bert Hellinger using human representatives to stage and resolve unconscious family dynamics transmitted across generations.
Presentation
Family constellations are a psychotherapeutic method developed in the 1990s by Bert Hellinger (1925–2019). This phenomenological approach posits that unconscious family dynamics — linked to unresolved events in previous generations — transmit and create 'entanglements' in descendants who unconsciously reproduce inherited suffering patterns.
Founder: Bert Hellinger (1925–2019), psychotherapist, Germany
Core Principles
Orders of love: right of belonging, hierarchical order, balance between giving and receiving. Entanglement: when a family member was excluded, a descendant may unconsciously take on their fate. Morphic field: representatives resonate with those they represent.
Main Indications
- Transgenerational pattern repetition
- Unresolved grief and family secrets
- Recurrent relational difficulties
- Persistent feelings of exclusion
- Unexplained professional or existential blocks
Session Overview
Constellations are primarily practiced in groups (10-30 participants). The consultant briefly presents their issue, chooses representatives for key family members and places them in space intuitively. The facilitator observes spontaneous movements and guides resolution phrases and symbolic repositioning. Duration: 20-60 minutes.
Variations
- Classical family constellation (group)
- Individual constellation (figurines)
- Structural constellation (Varga von Kibéd)
- Organizational constellation
Contraindications
- Active psychosis
- Too fragile personality structure
- Recent unstabilized trauma
